What is the difference between Epoxy Paint and an Epoxy Floor Coating?

Epoxy floor coatings are NOT paint! Epoxy paint is a latex acrylic product. Many big manufacturers offer these products that have a VERY small amount of epoxy in the mix and market them as 1 part epoxy paint. High quality epoxy floor coatings will have 2 parts and a very high solids content. These 2 parts are the resin and the hardener. Before they are applied they are mixed together then spread on the floor. Unlike paint, which dries, epoxy floor coatings cure over time, cross linking the components. This provides a very durable surface that seals the concrete and makes the floor coating very resistant to, hot tire pick up, staining, scratching and chemicals.

What about hot tire pick up or staining?

This is caused for a couple reasons. A poor quality

epoxy / polyaspartic floor coating was used and improper surface preparation. As the tire cools, it contracts and pulls at the coating which can cause it to delaminate and stain. Stay away from the DIY kits and hire a professional with the proper tools to prepare the surface and apply a high quality industrial grade product.

Why should I seal my pavers?

  • Enhances Appearance: Paver sealers can enhance the natural colors of the pavers, making them look more vibrant. This can give your outdoor space a more attractive and well-maintained appearance.
  • Prevents Stains: Sealing pavers creates a protective barrier that repels oil, grease, dirt, and other common stains. This helps keep your pavers looking clean and reduces the need for frequent cleaning.
  • Reduces Weed Growth: Sealed pavers are less porous, which means there are fewer openings for weed seeds to take root. This can reduce the frequency of weed growth between pavers.
  • Inhibits Mold and Mildew: Pavers in damp or shaded areas can develop mold and mildew growth over time. Sealing them can inhibit the growth of these unsightly and potentially slippery substances.
  • Extends Lifespan: Sealing pavers can extend their lifespan by protecting them from the elements. It can prevent the pavers from eroding, cracking, or fading due to exposure to UV rays, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Stabilizes Joint Sand: Many pavers are laid with joint sand between them to provide stability and prevent shifting. Sealing helps lock the joint sand in place, reducing erosion and minimizing the risk of paver displacement.
  • Facilitates Easier Cleaning: Sealed pavers are easier to clean because dirt and stains are less likely to penetrate the surface. Routine maintenance, such as sweeping or hosing down, becomes more effective.
  • Improves Durability: The protective barrier created by sealers can make pavers more resistant to wear and tear, especially in high-traffic areas

I have a new house with bare concrete. Does the surface need to be prepped before applying an epoxy/polyaspartic floor coating?

Absolutely!! Every one of our floors are ground, profiled and cleaned thoroughly before any epoxy or polyaspartic coatings are applied. This will insure the epoxy and polyaspartic bonds to the substrate properly.
